Pine Bluff, Arkansas – The quorum court failed to secure a majority to approve the budget during a five-hour meeting on Monday night.

On the table were two or three budgets. The county judge suggested one of the budgets, while the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office presented the other. According to sheriff’s office Major John Bean, the county judge’s budget excluded certain jailer salaries and juvenile meals.

The court kept filing requests to change the current projected budget even after the vote was unsuccessful. But the court was also unable to secure a majority vote on that.

The county is now closed. Only those who are absolutely necessary must work. They will attempt to adopt a budget on Tuesday, according to County Judge Gerald Robinson.

Employees would have received their paychecks on Wednesday if the budget had been approved. County employees will not be paid until a 2025 budget is approved.

The court also decided to adopt meeting rules and procedures at Monday night’s meeting, which will be in effect until February 28. After making revisions to the rules and procedures, the court intends to pass the updated version, which should be in force for the remainder of the year.
