Applications to UAPB increased by 65% for the fall semester
Pine Bluff, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff is reporting an increase in applications as the new academic year draws near; the institution says this is something they haven’t seen in the previous ten years.
According to Dr. Moses Goldmon, the vice chancellor for enrollment management and student success at UAPB, there have been 65% more applications from students than there were at this time last year for the forthcoming fall semester.
“We are seeing an increase in our applications that exceeds what we have seen in the last 10 years,” said Dr. Goldmon.
Applicant volume is continually growing, according to Dr. Goldmon, who anticipates that it will reach the end of the month.
“I think overall it speaks to the value of education that students know they will get when they come to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff,” Dr. Goldmon said.
He reports that they have had over 7,200 applications, and he thinks that adding new degree programs and altering their recruitment strategy has contributed to this growth.
He claims that because HBCUs are historically black colleges and universities, they don’t allow preconceptions to get in the way of their ability to reach students.
“One of the things we do well is our student support,” Goldman said. “We make sure our students have what they need to be successful in their classes.”
“Some people talk about there may be some negative things or stigmas associated with HBCUs, but we really just try to focus on who we are, what we do and that’s helped us out tremendously,” Goldman added.
While most applicants are from within the state, some come from as far away as Missouri, Tennessee, and even California.
“Students are going to get a well-rounded experience,” Dr. Goldmon said.
