As the shutdown continues, Pine Bluff’s Big Banjo Pizza provides food for Jefferson County staff
Pine Bluff, Arkansas A Pine Bluff pizza place is assisting Jefferson County residents affected by the county government closure.
Traci Johnson, a county 9-1-1 dispatcher, is among the nearly 400 county employees who have missed pay as a result of Jefferson County’s weeks-long government closure.
“I am the primary provider for my household,” Johnson stated. “There are five of us. My spouse has a disability.
People like Johnson are finding it challenging to put food on the table and pay their expenses because of their lack of income.
Fortunately, the Pine Bluff community has come together to provide the greatest assistance possible to those impacted.
“They just keep bringing us food, so by the time this is over, I’m going to weigh 400 pounds,” Johnson remarked.
Thanks to manager Amy Parker, Big Banjo Pizza Parlor is one of the numerous establishments supporting Jefferson County staff.
“I contacted several departments; some were already receiving food, so I proceeded down the list until I discovered one that wasn’t,” Parker remarked.
About 40 employees from Jefferson County were able to share a complimentary pizza. The eatery was packed with grateful patrons. Parker claimed that her interaction with several employees left her feeling moved.
Parker remarked, “One man who has been with the road department for fifty years said he had never encountered this.”
She and Johnson expect that financial help will soon be available to Jefferson County employees. Johnson remarked, “I’m not sure how long any of us can go without a check.”
