Bald eagles migrating to NEA area
Jonesboro, Arkansas – This fall, if you happen to be bird watching in Region 8, there’s a strong chance you’ll spot a bald eagle, according to officials.
There are hundreds of bald eagle nesting pairs in the natural condition, and the arrival of lower temperatures signals the beginning of the migration season.
Every year, more bald eagles arrive in Northeast Arkansas, according to Randy Zellers of Arkansas Game and Fish.
According to Zellers, “they’re actually migrating in a similar way as ducks and geese do; open water is important to eagles just as it is to ducks.”
Brent Coggin, a farmer in Jonesboro, saw a bald eagle earlier this week in the fields between I-55 and Highway 158.
Zellers advised appreciating its beauty from a distance if you come across one. They are impressive birds, he observed.
According to Zellers, “an adult bald eagle’s wingspan can reach up to 8 feet, which is wider than an NBA basketball player’s height.”
It is forbidden to annoy or hurt bald eagles, and it is a federal offense to injure one.
