Families in the NICU at UAMS were delighted with a special holiday surprise from the staff
Little Rock, Arkansas – The NICU team at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences spread some holiday joy to families facing challenging circumstances.
Families in the NICU experienced an early Christmas celebration with Santa, Mrs. Claus, The Gingerbread Man, Frosty, and more.
“Our preparations for this have been ongoing for several months.” On Monday, we took pictures with Santa alongside our babies and families,” stated Dr. Sarah Peeples, Neonatologist and NICU Medical Director. “We will be walking around the unit in various costumes and props, distributing photos to the families.”
Staff members fill the halls with music, aiming to bring joy to the families they support.
“It’s truly challenging when a holiday arrives and your baby is unwell or hospitalized,” remarked Peeples. “Our aim is to create opportunities for families to receive support and cherish special moments, such as capturing their first picture with Santa. We hope to offer experiences that feel familiar and joyful, bringing a bright spot to their holiday season.”
Families like the Lydolphs, who have spent nearly a month in the NICU, are receiving a touch of holiday cheer.
Julie Lydolph shared that she welcomed her twin babies at 27 weeks, occurring just a day after her baby shower.
Even with this alarming situation, they express confidence in the excellent care provided by the NICU.
Lydolph stated, “There were no issues at all; everything proceeded as planned.” “Unexpectedly in labor with these two precious blessings.” It was quite frightening at first, but now that we’ve been here, the staff has truly delivered exceptional care, making us feel at ease and surpassing all our expectations.
An additional benefit is a photo that can be treasured for a lifetime.
“They have created something truly remarkable, capturing photos that we will cherish forever, and the parade today is simply incredible.”
Wyatt Lydolph expressed that the staff in the NICU has gone above and beyond their expectations.
“We didn’t expect to be here with the kids, but this experience has really helped us feel much more at ease,” remarked Wyatt Lydolph.
Peeples expressed their desire to uphold the tradition next year, aiming to spread joy to the families they support.
Families in the NICU received photos taken with Santa, accompanied by a candy cane treat from the staff.
