Monument to be built honoring 1955 Hoxie school integration
Hoxie, Arkansas – To commemorate individuals who integrated Hoxie Public Schools seventy years ago, a local state lawmaker sponsored a bill.
The bill introduced by Representative Fran Cavenaugh would change the law to allow the memorial to be located on the grounds of the state capitol.
The Hoxie School Board fully integrated all of the school’s facilities and voluntarily desegregated the school in 1955.
The first court case for school desegregation “changed the face of Arkansas public schools,” according to the bill.
The Hoxie: The First Stand Memorial Monument Fund was established by the Secretary of State to receive donations, grants, and gifts.
The monument’s upkeep will also be covered by the fund.
According to the law, Hoxie the First Stand, Inc. recommended that the memorial be planned and built.
