Over 1,500 prison beds have been added in the last two years
Little Rock, Arkansas – Over the past two years, extra prison beds have been added to numerous jails throughout the Natural State.
Since taking office, the state of Arkansas has opened 1,485 beds, according to a statement from Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
According to Sanders, the state has had a deficit of prison beds for many years.
“These 1,500 beds go a long way toward relieving the strain on county jails and getting violent offenders off our streets, even as we continue to make progress on the new prison we are building,” Sanders stated.
New prison beds were distributed to numerous jails in Northeast Arkansas, including:
• Batesville
– 173 beds in the White River Correctional Center
• Newport
– 16 beds in Grimes Unit
– 244 beds in McPherson Unit
In addition to additional beds, Sanders said she hopes to alleviate “the burden of long-term incarceration from county governments and create safer communities across the state” by purchasing land in Franklin County in October to construct a new jail.
