Poinsett County, Arkansas – Following almost seven years of extensive renovations, Lake Poinsett will officially reopen for harvesting on January 1, 2025.

Crews from Arkansas Game and Fish have successfully completed repairs on the water control structure and the outflow pipe, which facilitates the movement of excess water through the levy pipe.

According to Fisheries Management Biologist Allison Asher, the lake experienced more than two miles of shoreline erosion.

“The shoreline was eroding into the lake due to wind and water action, with very steep banks, resulting in a loss of land to the lake,” stated Asher.

During the renovation process, the lake was drained, allowing the AGFC to improve the fishery.

“We have incorporated more than 150 habitat structures, commonly referred to as fish attractors.” “This provides anglers with a dedicated spot to focus their efforts,” stated Asher.

The lake has been completely stocked with channel catfish, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, crappie, and largemouth bass.

Asher stated, “Anglers are permitted to harvest largemouth bass, with a daily limit set at 10. However, only one of these can exceed 16 inches in length.”

At Lake Poinsett, anglers are permitted to keep a daily limit of 15 crappies. Asher mentioned that the community has been anticipating the opportunity to harvest these predator species once more for almost 7 years.
