Tanker truck rolls over, catches fire on I-40

Arkansas – A fully-loaded diesel fuel tanked truck rolled over and caught fire on I-40 in Ozark Wednesday morning.

The fire spread across the median and both eastbound and westbound sides were closed near Exit 35. The fire sent large clouds of black smoke into the air. For a period of time, Franklin County Emergency Management recommended everyone north of I-40 near Ozark should shelter in place due to hazardous fumes.

That recommendation was lifted shortly before noon after a southerly wind helped create “good dispersion,” Rick Covert, Franklin County Emergency Manager, told Pine Bluff Today.

Crews were still fighting the fire at noon and Covert warned the interstate would likely stay closed for several more hours.

No injuries were reported.
