North Little Rock, Arkansas – You might be wondering what the new device on top of several traffic lights around town is if you live in North Little Rock or drive through the area.

Like Rachel Ketcher, many people had no idea what the device was.

“I wasn’t sure what it does, but I’ve seen it around town,” Ketcher said. “I also assumed it was a fan.”

It isn’t a fan, but it is something that helps keep the roads safe, according to North Little Rock officials.

According to NLR chief traffic signal technician Jacob Mahan, “This was a way to alleviate that connectivity issue with our traffic signals, our traffic cameras, and our city’s camera system.”

According to Mahan, Air Fiber functions similarly to a radio system, maintaining the clarity and alertness of the city’s traffic cameras. According to him, it also helps them share information with their real-time crime center and stay abreast of traffic trends throughout North Little Rock.

Mahan stated, “They can immediately pull those cameras up and see what’s going on when they get a 911 call.” “I’ve heard that they’ve used that method to solve a good number of robberies and crimes.”

Ketcher said she feels a little safer knowing this is what the devices do.

“It gives me the impression that someone is watching,” Ketcher remarked. “With all the technology we have now, I’m not surprised we have them, but I feel comfortable with it.”
