The Pine Bluff pantry organizes a food giveaway to help Jefferson County staff
Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Keeping its employees unpaid on Monday night is another example of Jefferson County’s inability to enact a budget. A nearby food pantry is already taking action to ensure that those workers and their families don’t go hungry.
After the vote kept the county government closed and hundreds of its employees were left without pay for more than a week, Debra Allen, director of the First Ward Living Grace Food Pantry, said they intended to do a food distribution.
“I’m hoping they figure out a budget that works for everyone.” Allen remarked, “I hope we can put an end to this.” It damages your spirit. They won’t receive a check. They are parents.
Since the shutdown, Allen said, they have been working twice as hard to provide staff with supplies and necessities, such as last week’s food distribution. But this week, she said, local eateries are helping out.
Hot dogs and hamburgers will be distributed during the giveaway, according to Niche Walters, who works at RJ’s Sports Grill and Bar.
“I’m here to help because it’s crazy what’s going on and everyone needs to eat,” Walters stated.
Allen hopes for a speedy conclusion but intends to continue to assist.
Allen remarked, “I hope they can go to work knowing they will get a paycheck.”
Only Jefferson County employees are eligible for the food giveaway and hot plate lunch, which will be held at 1201 Commerce Road in Pine Bluff on Thursday, January 23 at 1 p.m.
