Little Rock, Arkansas – At an elementary school in the Little Rock School District, a new room is assisting students with autism in learning while also helping them to relax.

According to representatives of Western Hills Elementary School, their new autism program includes the creation of a sensory area. According to district officials, this is the first elementary school sensory room in the district that is operational.

According to Angelica Carter, special program supervisor for autism classes at LRSD, the space will assist autistic kids in managing their emotions.

Carter remarked, “I think it’s a place to reset.” “Our autistic students frequently experience overwhelming feelings.”

According to Principal Pamela Freeman, if kids are experiencing difficulties in the classroom, they will have a space to unwind and be themselves in this area.

According to Freeman, “This provides them with a great safe space to come and expend some extra energy and have some sensory input.”

According to Carter, they include games and sensory devices in addition to a trampoline and play tunnels.

“We have noise-canceling headphones because sometimes they can be affected by noise if they’re overstimulated,” she explained.

According to Freeman, there are less than thirty autistic pupils at the school, and the room is available to assist them if they become agitated or overwhelmed.

According to Freeman, “They are free for their peer professional to walk them over and give them that time to calm down.”

She expressed her desire that, in addition to educating at all levels, the sensory room will assist kids with their independent requirements.
