Wynne woman honored for efforts to recover from storm
Wynne, Arkansas – Federal recognition has been given to a Wynne woman for her work after the tornado in March 2023.
Leanne Lovell received the 2024 Phoenix Award for Outstanding Volunteer Contributions to Disaster Recovery from the Small Business Administration’s Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience.
A news release from the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management indicated that Lovell was a key figure in organizing the town’s recovery after an EF3 tornado destroyed it in Cross County.
According to the SBA, she set up a 21,000-square-foot distribution center where she oversaw 200 volunteers every day, brought in medical professionals and counselors to attend to the survivors’ physical and mental health needs, and assisted in finding families with temporary accommodation.
“The State of Arkansas owes a huge thank you to citizens like Leanne Lovell,” said Arkansas Division of Emergency Management Director A.J. Gary. “Her unwavering commitment to helping her community rebuild is exactly the type of response Arkansans are known for when disaster strikes.”
