CDC issues nationwide food safety alert on salmonella outbreak from cantaloupes
A recent food safety alert issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has highlighted a concerning outbreak of Salmonella infection across the United States, with a notable case count reaching 99, including one in Arkansas. This outbreak has been linked to various brands of cantaloupes and pre-cut fruit products.
The CDC’s initial report on November 17 indicated that 43 people across 15 states had been infected. However, a follow-up report released on Friday revealed a significant increase, with an additional 56 people from 17 more states being affected. This brings the total to 99 reported cases in 32 states, signaling a widespread health concern.
Recalled Products
In response to the outbreak, several brands of both whole and pre-cut cantaloupes have been recalled. These include the Malichita brand whole cantaloupe, Vinyard brand pre-cut cantaloupe, and ALDI whole cantaloupe and pre-cut fruit products. Additionally, Rudy brand whole cantaloupes, as well as Freshness Guaranteed and RaceTrac brand pre-cut cantaloupes, are also part of the recall.
The CDC advises consumers who have any of these products in their homes to dispose of them immediately to prevent further spread of the infection. The recall and advisory encompass a broad range of products, indicating the seriousness of the outbreak.
Further Information and Precautions
For more detailed information about the outbreak and the specific products involved, consumers are encouraged to visit the CDC’s website. The alert provides critical guidance on how to identify the recalled products and the necessary steps to take if one has purchased or consumed them.
This Salmonella outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for vigilance regarding the sources and handling of produce. Consumers are urged to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to ensure their health and safety.
